It is to your benefit to protect your investment by getting a pre-inspection done on the boat. Many times, individuals may think that they are familiar with boats, and make the purchase without first getting this crucial inspection done. The inner decay of water saturated stringers or hull are not visible to the naked eye and takes an expert to determine the extent of the deterioration. If there is excessive moisture on the stringers or transom, there usually is additional major structural issues with the boat due to the high moisture levels. The needed repairs usually amount in the thousands of dollars, and the boat is usually never the same once the repairs are done. For the purpose of obtaining a marine survey there are several circumstances that need to be met in order for insurance to be granted on boats. Most boats that are over 15 or 20 years old require a survey to be done on them for insurance purposes and many times the marina requires confirmation that the boat has insurance on it before dock space is rented to the owner of the boat. The survey includes a thorough inspection of the interior and exterior of the boat. This would include for us to inspect the exterior, interior, interior cabins, hull, engines, engine compartment, accessories and front and rear deck and record our finding into the survey report. We will do a moisture meter reading and tap test on the exterior and interior of the hull and record our findings. The insurance company usually wants an out of water survey and this would be for us to determine the integrity of the exterior of the hull. Sometimes this may involve for the boat to be lifted out of the water for a few minutes for us to inspect the exterior, and then the boat can be put back into the water for us to complete the survey. It also requires us to hear the engines running and operation of additional accessories. If you have your boat out of the water for the winter, or in storage, this would be an excellent time for us to view the bottom of the boat, but we will have to come out for a second inspection once the boat is in the water. It would be wise for you to have any necessary safety equipment or needed repairs or servicing to be done on the boat prior to the inspection, so that you would have a clear report with no recommendations to record. At times when there are some needed recommendations that are specified in the report, the insurance company may not grant insurance until the recommendations are met, and then a subsequent inspection will have to be done to verify and satisfy the insurance company. This may at times be more costly and time wasted for the short summer usage of your boat.
